Christmas is over and it’s the start of a New Year! Don’t let the January blues get you down, instead set yourself a new goal and challenge yourself to stick to it! ReesLeisure have plenty of realistic opportunities to get you started and can help along the way. On the 26th April the ABP Southampton Marathon is back for its 6th year, and the event also has a Half Marathon, 10k and Family Fun Run all on the same day – something for everyone!
The Family Fun Run is at 4pm and is a 1km course around the city centre parks, a gentle course for those just starting out on their running journey or recovering from injury / treatment. It’s also buggy friendly and if signing-up your children don’t forget to add their school so we can include their results in the school’s challenge! The 10k run starts at 10am and is the perfect challenge for those starting their ‘Couch to 5k’ journey this New Year – by April you’ll be attending parkrun every Saturday and will fly around the 10k course with ease! The Half Marathon and Full Marathon start at 9am and are aimed at both those looking to take part in these distances for the first time and experienced runners alike. We have Training Plans ready to share with you over the next few months with helpful advice to keep you on track – keep an eye on our blog page for these from Savage Sports.
If you do decide to set yourself a challenge why not take a look at our wonderful Charity Partners and choose one of them to fundraise for during your training journey. You may find a charity that is dear to you or discover a new local charity that you’ve not heard of before. There are lots to choose from and all would be extremely grateful for your support. Completing a personal challenge is a huge achievement and friends and family will be excited to support your journey and fundraising. Here are some suggestions from a small selection of our Charity Partners:
Abby’s Heroes “Run for Us! We help local families at the unthinkable moment when their child has been diagnosed with cancer, offering financial help, practical support, and grants to help families make cherished family memories” Sally Randall, Founder, Abby’s Heroes.
“Friends of PICU are pleased to be able to offer charity places for the fabulous ABP Southampton Marathon on April 26th. If you are interested in supporting children's intensive care at the Southern Regional treatment centre at Southampton University Hospital, please contact the charity directly. The PICU treats over 1,000 children per year, post-surgery or suffering from illnesses or accidents. More than half of the children are retrieved from across the South of England for specialist treatment and care that can only be provided at Southampton. Help us raise funds and together we can make a difference to the care that can be provided.” Mark Hilder, Operations Manager, Friends of PICU.
Cancer Research UK “Get your free place and join Team CRUK at the ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k! We receive no government funding for our life-saving research. Every step we take towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated, and every runner. When you stand united, cancer doesn’t stand a chance. So, be on the team that will get you to the finish line. Wear your free running vest with pride and take a look at our training tips” James Shah, Sports Team Executive, Cancer Research UK.
"Countess Mountbatten Hospice , West End, Southampton are very excited to again be part of ABP Southampton Marathon 2020. This is a very important time for us since we recently became independent, which means that going forwards much of the £6 million it costs to provide our vital services will need to be met from voluntary donations and fundraising. As your local hospice, we would be delighted to welcome runners to participate in either the 10K, half or full marathons to fundraise for us." Mark Gowers, Community & Events Fundraising Assistant, Countess Mountbatten Hospice.
No Limits “Last year, our runners raised an incredible £1,604.95 for No Limits. This money went directly to the work we do across Southampton, offering support to thousands of children and young people with their mental health, drink and drugs misuse, sexual health, housing issues and much more, by providing free advice, counselling, support and specialist groups. We still have places available for the ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k so please do sign up - not only will you get your FREE No Limits running vest, but all of our charity running spaces are also FREE! All we ask is that you raise a minimum sponsorship amount. Please help us to beat our fundraising target and support even more children and young people across the city this year!” Lizi Fewtrell, Fundraising Officer, No Limits.
If there is a charity that you’d like to support that isn’t listed on our website, don’t worry, you can still run for them. Just register through our site and then contact that charity to let them know. Don’t forget to set up a justgiving account to collect your sponsorship.
