Kevin has decided to run this year's ABP Southampton Marathon for the fantastic charity Communicare.
Kevin Sawers ran his one and only marathon to date some 13 years ago.
In 2006, he crossed the finish line in London. It is an achievement in itself to complete a marathon - let alone when throbbing knee pain blights your 26.2-mile journey through the capital's streets.
But, like many - and not withstanding the toll on his body, Kevin caught the marathon bug and knew he would be back for another crack one day.
And now, that time has come.
After resuming running a couple of years ago following a long break, the 41-year-old is in training for May’s ABP Southampton Marathon.
Kevin is not just running for himself though, far from it.
The Hedge End Running Club member is fundraising for Communicare in Southampton – the Southampton-based charity which enriches the quality of life for lonely and isolated people in the city.
Run by committed and wonderful volunteers, Communicare – one of the ABP Southampton Marathon’s official charitable partners – makes a huge difference to the lives of hundreds of local people by offering practical and emotional support, across a range of areas including: transport, DIY and shopping.
“My wife works for Communicare and I'm well aware of the important and really valuable work they do, so it was an obvious choice to run for a local charity like them,” Kevin told the ABP Southampton Marathon.
“Communicare offer brilliant support in Southampton, helping people fight and overcome feelings of loneliness and isolation. I'm delighted to be running for the charity.”
With a target time of an impressive three hours and 45 minutes, his training (touch wood) has been ticking along nicely to date. And long may that continue.
“My programme has been going well,” Kevin, who frequently competes in cross-country races with his running club, said.
“I got back into running because I wanted to feel good and healthy again, and being part of my run club has been fantastic.
"It has really encouraged me to press on and enjoy going running with a mix of runners, in terms of speed and distances.”
Kevin is also no stranger to our ABP Southampton Marathon events, having taken part in last year's Half on that sweltering hot day in April 2018.
“It's an all-round really good route, taking you past the scenic sights of the city. I enjoyed going through St Mary's Stadium and over Itchen bridge - taking in the views.
“I found the long run up Highfield Lane, back towards the Common, tough-going but, overall, it's a big event and lots of people line the streets and support, so I’m really looking forward to running the full marathon this time!”
